Recap - #20 Mississippi State 8, #16 Ole Miss 3, 4/22/14

The Bulldogs Hoist the Governor's Cup

Mississippi State scored six consecutive runs in front of a stadium record breaking crowd at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi en route to an 8-3 victory over hated rival Ole Miss.

John Cohen and Butch Thompson surprised us all when they decided that JUCO transfer Lucas Laster would start on the mound for the Bulldogs, but boy, did he surprise us all. Although he gave up three runs and hit six batters, he struck out two and gave up just two hits in 5 1/3 innings. Freshman Vance Tatum replaced Laster on the mound and he struck out three and gave up just one hit in 3 2/3 innings.

The bats woke up for Mississippi State in Pearl, and Gavin Collins had a tremendous day. He went 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Also, Wes Rea woke up from hibernation Tuesday as he went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and scored a run.

Wes Rea Went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a Run in Mississippi State's 8-3 Victory Over Ole Miss

Overall, it was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Ole Miss started with a run in the 1st and no one put anything on the board until the 3rd when Gavin Collins hit a 2 RBI single, giving MSU the 2-1 lead. After a 1-2-3 4th for both teams and a scoreless 5th, more was added to the board in the 6th. Although not getting a hit, Ole Miss was able to get 2 runs and the Bulldogs answered with 3 of their own, and they took the 5-3 lead. From there, it was all Bulldogs. 2 more were added in the 7th and another in the 8th sealed the victory for Mississippi State at 8-3.

Mississippi State improves to 27-15, 10-8 and will play a three game series versus Texas A&M, the first being Thursday at 6:30 PM on ESPNU.
