NCAA Regional Recap - #17 (2) Mississippi State 5, (3) San Diego State 2, 5/30/14

In the first game of the Lafayette regional, Mississippi State took care of the Aztecs of San Diego State 5-2.

Trevor Fitts started on the bump for the Bulldogs and, although having a shaky start, had a great outing. He struck out two and gave up three hits and two runs in 5 innings. Myles Gentry replaced Fitts on the mound and had an even better day. He struck out one but gave up no hits in 4 innings pitched.

The Bulldog bats came up big when it mattered most. Jake Vickerson went 2-4 with 3 RBIs, having the best day for the Bulldogs. Other good days included Alex Detz, going 2-4 with a RBI and a run and Brett Pirtle who went 2-4 with a scored run.

After a scoreless 1st, the Aztecs got on the board first with a RBI single and a sac fly to start off with a 2-0 lead, but Mississippi State fought back in a big way. It started with a Matthew Britton RBI single and after C.T. Bradford walked to load the bases, Jake Vickerson tripled to clear the bases and give the Bulldogs the 4-2 lead through 2 innings. In the 5th, the Bulldogs bit again with a RBI single by Alex Detz that scored Brett Pirtle. The rest of the ballgame was a pitching battle, and MSU finished the job with a 5-2 victory.

In the other side of the regional, the Jackson State Tigers upset the host UL Lafayette 1-0, so Jackson State will head to the winner's bracket and UL Lafayette will be going to the loser's bracket to face San diego State in an elimination game.

Mississippi State improves to 38-22 and will face Jackson State at 6:00 PM on ESPN3.
